A Love Letter to Philadelphia
Dear Philadelphia,
The only thing better than a super fun road trip is one that has plenty of sights and attractions that won’t break the bank. That’s why I love travelling to a city meant for walking. I like to make a list of some of the must-see locals and just spend a day or two hanging around, wandering the streets. Philly is a great city to do this. There are plenty of walkable neighbourhoods, and there’s also a number of convenient bike rental docks, which allow you to hit up some far corners of the city with ease. (Since my visit, I see that e-scooters have also hit the Philly scene!)
City Hall is an iconic stop on the map with exquisite, stunning Second Empire architecture. Often host to community events, I was able to take in a holiday market filled with food and craft vendors and rows of twinkle light. It’s a totally magical venue at dusk.
I LOVE a city market (or farmer’s market, for that matter). Reading Terminal Market has so much to see and delicious food on the cheap. Grab yourself a quintessential Philly cheesesteak or, one of my personal favourites, a delectable soft pretzel.
Get into fighting shape with a run up the iconic Rocky Steps (yes I actually did the run like a huge dork. Click here to see it). Even if you’re not a fan of the movies, the stairs at the top of the Philadelphia Museum of Art allow for a great view of the city. And since you’re there, you should check out the Rocky Balboa statue out front, and pop in to view the rest of their (non-boxing) collection.
As you take to the streets, you’ll see there’s plenty of amazing street art, sculptures, murals, and interesting neighbourhood character to see around town.
If you’re a fan of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, then you MUST take a stroll through the Italian Market. If you’re lucky, you’ll score a new cassette tape for your car.
Oh and no stop in the city of brotherly love is complete without a high five from ol’ Benny F himself. You can find his likeness at several locations around town but my personal favourite is outside the Masonic Temple.
What’s your favourite part of Philly to wander past? Let me know in comments or on IG!
xoxo Krista
